When the harvest is hung to dry

Eight games on the barn desk
while the bundles dry in the rafters

Once the last bundles are hung head-down from the rafters, Violette pulls a stool up to the old desk at the back of the drying barn. Its bookmarks hold eight free browser games: a second farm on screen, a zoo, a football club, two empires among the stars, a medieval village, a frontier camp and a moonlit feud between vampires and werewolves. Every one opens in a plain browser tab, with nothing to install beforehand.

What all 8 cost: free to play, with optional in-game purchases.

01

Free from the first row

Each game here can be joined for nothing and played for months: fields, enclosures, matches, villages, camps, fleets, colonies and hunts all come in the free version.

Next to the free game, each studio runs an optional store: premium currency, sped-up timers, outfits and other trimmings. Plenty of long-time players have never once opened it, and on a shared household machine the account settings can usually lock spending away.

02

The first evening at the desk

The buttons here each open a game's own official website in a new browser tab. A brief sign-up usually follows there, and a minute or two later your farm, zoo, club, village, camp, empire or creature of the night is waiting.

Almost all of them start with a guided introduction. Follow it to the end; you will learn the menus far faster than by wandering about alone.

03

Games that keep growing while you are out in the rows

All eight keep moving while your back is turned: crops come ready, fixtures get played, armies march on and fleets stay in the air. A look with the morning coffee and another after supper is usually plenty.

The space empires reward care here, because a fleet in flight can be caught by others. Time your long trips for when you know you will be back.

04

Barring the barn door on your logins

Your logins live with the studios that run each game, so only ever type one in at that studio's genuine address. Use a different password per title, the way Violette keeps a separate key for each barn, and where a studio lets you bolt on a code from your phone, bolt it on.

Nobody genuine from a game studio will ever want your password. When a stranger in chat offers free premium currency for your login details, your account is the real target, so walk away.

Why these eight made the barn desk

  • Each of them starts in an ordinary computer browser, so an evening in the barn begins without any setup.
  • Joining is free, and the heart of every game is there for players who would rather leave the store alone.
  • The moods range widely: a farm, a zoo, a football bench, a medieval village, a frontier camp, two star empires and a gothic feud.
  • Every studio keeps its servers busy, so tribes, alliances and leagues are run by real people at the other end.

No. Every game on the barn desk loads in a desktop browser as it is. My Free Farm 2, Zoo 2: Animal Park, Online Soccer Manager, Tribal Wars 2 and OGame also offer an optional mobile app; WildGuns, Nemexia and BiteFight are played in a computer browser.

No. Every one is free to join, and the core game can be played without paying; extras are only ever your own choice.

No. Outside studios build and host all eight, and every button here simply takes you to the official site.

No. Several separate studios make them, so you register with each game on its own site.

My Free Farm 2 or Zoo 2: Animal Park, both built on calm care rounds. OGame and Tribal Wars 2 ask the most patience and planning.

All eight do. Crops grow, fixtures are played, armies march and fleets travel with the tab closed, so drop back in at sensible times.

Yes. Tribal Wars 2 has tribes, OGame and Nemexia have alliances, Online Soccer Manager has leagues of human managers, and WildGuns and BiteFight put you up against other players.
